Museums & Gardens

An oceanographic institute in a cliff, a cactus garden over a cave, and a Japanese garden by the sea.

The museum that is also a building

The Oceanographic Museum was founded by Prince Albert I, who was a working oceanographer rather than a patron — he ran expeditions and mapped currents. Jacques Cousteau directed it for over thirty years.

The façade rises straight out of the cliff above the sea, and the roof terrace is one of the best views in the country.

Three very different gardens

The Exotic Garden grows succulents on a vertical cliff over a stalactite cave. The Japanese garden is free, properly made, and beside the sea. The rose garden is out on the reclaimed ground at Fontvieille and is used by residents.

Check closing days individually — they do not all shut on the same one.
