Why there is a country here at all
The Greeks and then the Romans used this inlet. Everything else — the terraces, the towers, the reclaimed ground — came later and came from here.
The quays are public and free, and walking the full length takes about twenty minutes. It is the clearest way to understand the shape of the place: the rock on one side, Monte-Carlo climbing on the other.
Two harbours
Port Hercule is the original. Fontvieille is the second one, on ground that did not exist before the 1970s.
From spring, Port Hercule is progressively taken over by grandstands and barriers for the May street race, and parts of the quay close.
