Fontvieille

A whole district that did not exist in 1960 — built out into the sea on purpose.

Getting infree — it is a quarter
Worth knowing—

Monaco ran out of land and made more. Fontvieille was reclaimed from the sea in the 1960s and 70s, adding roughly a fifth to the country's area: a second harbour, housing, a shopping centre, the stadium, a heliport and a park.

It is the least glamorous part of Monaco and the most revealing. This is where the country put the things a country actually needs, on ground it manufactured.

The park, the rose garden and the car collection are all here.

Walk in from the harbour rather than taking a bus. Crossing from old ground onto made ground is the whole story of this country in five minutes.
