The country has almost no natural shoreline left, so the beach at Larvotto was made: sheltered behind breakwaters on reclaimed ground, with sand brought in.
It is genuinely public and free, with a promenade behind it, and it was rebuilt and enlarged in a recent scheme that also added a sea wall and new planting.
It is small and it is the only real beach in the country, so in July and August it fills.
The Japanese garden is directly across the road, and it is free and empty when the beach is not.
