The Street Circuit

The most famous street circuit in the world is ordinary public road for fifty weeks a year.

There is no track. The circuit is the existing streets — up the hill from the harbour, round the hairpin outside the Fairmont, down through the tunnel under the hotel and along the quay — closed and fitted with barriers once a year and returned to traffic afterwards.

Walking it is free and takes about an hour. The gradients are the thing photographs never convey: the climb from Sainte-Dévote is genuinely steep, and the hairpin is far tighter and far slower than it looks on television.

From roughly April the barriers, grandstands and fencing go up, and large parts of the harbour and streets are progressively closed. If you are visiting in May, check what is accessible before booking anything.

Start at Sainte-Dévote and walk it uphill in the direction the cars go. Downhill you learn nothing.
